Dave Barry's year in review: 2009
It was a year of Hope -- at first in the sense of ``I feel hopeful!'' and later in the sense of ``I hope this year ends soon!''

It was also a year of Change, especially in Washington, where the tired old hacks of yesteryear finally yielded the reins of power to a group of fresh, young, idealistic, new-idea outsiders such as Nancy Pelosi. As a result Washington, rejecting ``business as usual,'' finally stopped trying to solve every problem by throwing billions of taxpayer dollars at it and instead started trying to solve every problem by throwing trillions of taxpayer dollars at it.

To be sure, it was a year that saw plenty of bad news. But in almost every instance, there was offsetting good news:

Japanese Porn Game Lampoons Rape Game Controversy
An Amazon.com listing for RapeLay caused outrage back in February, leading to a boycott called by a New York Councilor (despite it not being actually released over here). Rape games were banned in Japan, then they weren't, then they were again, then some eroge makers stopped letting Western viewers view their web sites, while others got around the regulations by just not calling them "rape games" anymore. Phew, you still with me? Good!

Given the fallout and the controversy, it was only a matter of time before the game makers started poking fun at the whole kerfuffle in their games. The following text appears at the beginning of Shinobiryuu, an eroge released in Japan last Friday (as translated by Canned Dog):

    Declaration

This is a declaration made with the consensus of all the characters that appear in this story.

All the characters appearing in this game have gone through special training and all actions carried out are done on the basis of mutual agreement.

Even if you're a inhuman person who believes that fictional characters in creative works do not have human rights, please do not ignore this.

We also thank all the kind people who see a character in the story saying phrases such as "help me" and take it as a real call for help.

However, even though you are worrying for the characters in the story, these are all lines spoken from a script.

They are not saying all this from the bottom of their hearts. We are sorry that they have put in so much effort into their acting that some people will confuse it as something that is really happening.

This game is a fictional story.

If that little tongue-in-cheek disclaimer wasn't enough, the game also lampooned the hubbub in a conversation between two characters:
    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
I've recently learnt something that surprised me

    Listening Suigen Ninja:
    What is it?

    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
We, fictional characters, apparently have human rights.

    Listening Suigen Ninja:
    Huh?

    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
There are apparently some special people that will get angry and show sympathy for us if we get raped. And they'll start lobbying for us too.

    Listening Suigen Ninja:
Wow, we even can't do anything ourselves without a creator or a player but we have human rights

    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
    Surprising isn't it?

    Listening Suigen Ninja:
Yeah. But since they acknowledge that we have human rights, I wonder if they'll acknowledge that we have the right to vote too. Our creators will work hard to do some political manipulation.

    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
We can't be greedy. But well, since we have human rights we might as well suggest it.

    Listening Suigen Ninja:
    You're right

    Surprised Suigen Ninja:
We're doing as we please. Please stop taking unneccessary actions.

(So yeah, two more pages to go on that next chapter. Work work work.)
In Oath Breaker I, I was planning a scene where I cheat and break the point of view from Draco to Harry. It was going to be when Draco turned into a snake the first time. Then I decided I didn't want to break the structure I had created and altered the scene.

Meat Loaf said in an interview that he was having a nervous breakdown over being a rock star, and that breakdown only really stopped when he was able to say in all sincerity "I am a star."

In Oath Breaker II's next chapter, I have broken the point of view to Harry. In terms of craft, it's vitally important for intercharacter development and for purposes of the plot and understandability. More importantly than that, though, I have broken the structure because I can.

I look at my Kingdom Hearts writing and think of how lousy it is. I look at my Oath Breaker work and see good points as well as flaws. And I look at the work of other authors and see the flaws in their own material.

If my work is lousy, it's because I didn't live up to what I know I can write, the quality I have written before. And I know I can write. I *am* a writer. I'm a damned good writer. No caveats. No concessions to humility. I am a writer.

It took nigh 17 years--13 to 30--to come to that realization. None of this "I may never be published" or "I know I still have much to learn" or "I'll never be satisfied with my work." None of that.

I'm not a star yet. But that's coming, too.

I've been looking for this one for ages.

Have you ever seen a miracle - you couldn't doubt or imitate
What's it really worth to you to shake the holy hand of fate
Well I did what I could to make ends meet
Been a gunrunner and a medicine man
In a Kansas town I was a rainmaker - there the hand of fate got out of hand

Rainmaker Rainmaker save this one horse town
    Rainmaker pray to heaven

From the Flint Hills the land was cracked and dried
    Thirsty streets in misery
I took the sign down that said medicine man
Put one up that said rainmaker - that was me
So the townspeople gave me money up front
To light a fire - pray, and dance around
Tell them it'd rain so they'd all go to bed
And I'd make my break clean out of town

But I started this dance and a storm kicked up
The sky went black from coast to coast
It was too late to stop - it was to late to pray
I had summoned down the Holy Ghost
Oh the searing wind and the clouds of dust
    And hell came raining down
What came out of me and the powers that be
Was the last of that one horse town

This is why literary criticism (or just the critics) annoys the hell out of me sometimes.
I've been thinking about this for awhile, especially after watching both Frank Zappa's testimony to Congress all those years ago and the vile way he, Dee Snyder and John Denver were treated. On the vile way the first amendment was treated in the name of "the children," which seems to be the rallying cry of any movement bent on saving ourselves from ourselves. I pulled up the transcripts of Dee Snyder's testimony searching for this quote in mind due to seeing Snyder recall telling Tipper Gore that any sadism and rape in a song's lyrics were due to her own interpretation.

Dee Snider's Statement on Censorship to the U.S. Senate
This attack was contained in an article written by Tipper Gore, which was given the forum of a full page in my hometown newspaper on Long Island. In this article Ms. Gore claimed that one of my songs, "Under the Blade," had lyrics encouraging sadomasochism, bondage, and rape.

The lyrics she quoted have absolutely nothing to do with these topics. On the contrary, the words in question are about surgery and the fear that it instills in people. Furthermore, the reader of this article is led to believe that the three lines she quotes go together in the song when, as you can see, from reading the lyrics, the first two lines she cites are an edited phrase from the second verse and the third line is a misquote of a line from the chorus.

That the writer could misquote me is curious, since we make it a point to print all our lyrics on the inner sleeve of every album. As the creator of "Under the Blade," I can say categorically that the... only sadomasochism, bondage, and rape in this song is in the mind of Ms. Gore.

in which I go off on another rant on free speech and self-appointed critics, with the angle that just 'cause you see something in a fic doesn't mean everyone else does or that it's even there )

Manga rec: Dance in the Vampire Bund

Vampire queen Mina Tepes creates an island nation for vampires right off of the coast of Japan. But the vampires don't all agree with her views, and we follow the path of Akira as he struggles to protect Mina from increasingly terroristic threats.

I don't know why I seem to love manga with vampire queens, but this one has plenty of political maneuvering as well as a realized vampire culture, realistic interactions with humans and a nice blending of werewolf culture as well. And the maids! Oh my, I love the queen's maids. Their names make fun of how interchangeable background characters can be, but the omake theaters at the end of the sections give each maid her own personality. And a nice shout out from the mangaka to the yaoi girls is good, too. Yuki's character is like getting an audience member into the manga without getting retarded.

A warning, however. This is not a worksafe manga. There is no sex, and the violence isn't over the top all things considered, but if you're not comfortable with Japanese approaches to nudity, you're not going to be comfortable reading this.

'Harry Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe will have nude scenes with costar Emma Watson in upcoming film
In the upcoming movie, Yates explains, a monster tortures Harry's friend Ron (Rupert Grint) with images of Harry in some sort of tryst with Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), with whom Ron is passionately in love.

"We'll create something that feels very sexy and very intriguing to bring about a reaction in Rupert," Yates told the Telegraph of the scene.

The imaginary love scene isn't the only time Radcliffe will have to take his clothes off.

Yates adds, "There is another scene in King's Cross station, where Harry almost dies and sees Dumbledore. In that scene, he will also be naked."

Nooo, not Emma! Tom! Get Tom Felton to take his clothes off! Or hell, really screw with Ron's brain and let him imagine Harry and Draco together. I'll take just a couple seconds of film stills. Or he can imagine Harry and Hermione, and then Draco and Hermione, and us photoshoppers can do the rest later.

Okay, so there's a great review on youtube that's 7 parts long, and it totally rips The Phantom Menace a new orifice. It's a little odd and the reviewer has a sick sense of humor, but it's a sound review and pretty methodicaly done. If you want to see the whole thing, you can start at Part 1. I chose Part 6 because it captures something intrinsic to storytelling and the original Star Wars.

It's at the six minute mark that he starts talking about the light saber battles, and it's well done.
